I
would like to introduce to you Colby and Joyce Withers from Readlyn,
Iowa. Joyce and Colby have been married for 55 years.
Colby
& Joyce met at the Iowa State Teacher's College back in 1955
where Joyce was studying to be an elementary teacher. Colby was also
studying to be a teacher. After college they were married.
When
Joyce was growing up she loved listening to Dale Thomas & Leo
Greco. Her dad played accordion in a 5-piece band in Clarence, Iowa.
Joyce attended dances with her parents. Colby also listened to music
and learned how to waltz in high school.
Joyce
is full German and Colby is English, Irish, & Scotch. Lately
Colby has learned that he has a little Welch
heritage,
also. This is why they love to listen and dance to Barefoot Becky &
The Ivanhoe Dutchmen. They say she plays a variety of Dutch and Czech
music and the old time favorites. They also like the Malek's
Fishermen Band and several other bands around Iowa.
Colby & Joyce
started dancing regularly 20 years ago after they retired. They
attend many dances throughout Iowa and the US.
Colby
said that his doctor encourages him to continue dancing. He also told
Colby it's one of the best exercises you can get and have fun at the
same time.
Colby
and Joyce go to many dances around and tell younger people as long as
you have the rhythm you can dance. They have three daughters and none
of them dance. They can't even get them interested in the music.
Colby says that the only way to get the younger people involved is to
have the dance lessons in school.
This Interview was done in compliance with Colby & Joyce Withers on April 25, 2012 at the Meskwaki Casino dance in Tama, Iowa.
